Bulimia Nervosa


  • Recurrent episodes of binge eating and vomiting, usually in secret triggered by amongst other things unpleasant feelings, interpersonal difficulties and hunger through strict dieting
  • Eating an amount of food within a period of time that is larger than most people would eat in the same period of time
  • A sense of lack of control
  • Using laxatives
  • Excessive exercising
  • Obsessed about weight and link the issue to levels of self esteem
  • Tend to be perfectionists

Anorexia characteristics

  • Rapid weight loss
  • Barely eating any food
  • Obsession with calorie counting
  • Feeling anxious about eating around other people or having a big meal
  • Lie about what you have eaten
  • Lie about your weight
  • Exercise excessively
  • Fear of gaining weight
  • Take laxatives

Binge Eating Disorder Characteristics

  • Eating very large amounts of food over a short period of time even when not hungry
  • Feeling out of control when bingeing
  • Often hide the amount of food eaten and hide evidence, eg empty packets
  • Lie about what they have eaten
  • Unlike Bulimia there is no purging after a binge
